Testing internet reliability during a workspace trial
Trial coworking internet from the desks and rooms you would use, repeat real work tasks and record failures without overreading one speed test.
Test the connection from the desks and rooms your team would use, with its approved devices and services. Repeat essential tasks during a normal busy period. One successful speed test shows performance at one moment; it cannot establish reliable calls or access throughout a working week.
Decide what needs to work
List connection-dependent tasks: joining a video call, reaching a work application, opening and saving a typical file, or using an organisation-approved VPN. Ask your IT contact which tasks may be tried on the workspace network. Use sample files or test accounts where appropriate.
Before connecting, confirm the official network name and sign-in method with the operator. Follow your organisation's network rules; a connection working reliably does not establish that it is approved for sensitive work.
Before you connect: what to confirm
- List the connection-dependent tasks the team relies on
- Ask your IT contact which tasks may be tried on the workspace network
- Use sample files or test accounts rather than live data
- Confirm the official network name and sign-in method with the operator
- Check your organisation's network rules before any sensitive work
Run a repeatable trial
Use the same device and tasks at each candidate site. Record the date, time, seat or room, connection type and whether the area was busy. At each work location:
- Connect through the method members would use, including any sign-in page.
- Run a speed test and record its result, then complete an ordinary work task. Include a test call if calls are essential.
- Note interruptions, delayed loading, dropped calls and reconnects, with their times.
- Repeat at another relevant time. If colleagues will work together, ask whether they can trial simultaneous use.
Set a pass or fail condition for each essential task before comparing sites. Do not assume one download-speed number will suit every team. A call that works from a desk may still fail in the meeting room the team needs.
Running a repeatable trial at each site
- Use the same device and tasks at every candidate site
- Set a pass or fail condition for each essential task before comparing sites
- Connect through the method members would use, including any sign-in page
- Run a speed test and record the result, then complete an ordinary work task
- Note interruptions, delayed loading, dropped calls and reconnects, with their times
- Repeat at another relevant time, and trial simultaneous use if colleagues will work together
Narrow down a problem
If a problem appears in one part of the space, repeat the same task nearby and in the proposed meeting room. If the operator offers an approved wired connection, compare it with Wi-Fi on the same device.
Differences can help describe the fault to the operator, but a short trial cannot prove its cause.
Ask whom members contact during an interruption and whether a backup connection is available and permitted for your work. If the operator confirms that the site uses a covered nbn service, its address-based outage page can be one check.
A result showing no nbn network outage does not rule out a fault with an individual service. The tool excludes premises connected through Enterprise Ethernet and may miss some Sky Muster Plus satellite outages. Report a persistent problem to the operator for investigation with its service provider.
What an nbn outage check does and does not tell you
- ConfirmsWhether a covered nbn service at the address is affected by a network outage
- Does not rule outA fault with an individual service
- ExcludesPremises connected through Enterprise Ethernet
- May missSome Sky Muster Plus satellite outages
Record the decision
Trial record / Why it matters
- Task and location
- Shows which work was possible from the proposed space
- Time and occupancy
- Gives context for a result that may change later
- Connection and device
- Makes repeat checks more comparable
- Failure and response
- Shows whether the team had a usable alternative
- Unresolved question
- Identifies what the operator or your IT contact must confirm
Treat the trial as evidence about the times and places observed, not a guarantee of future uptime. If an essential task fails, ask for a fix and repeat that task before relying on the space. If connectivity is critical, check that an organisation-approved alternative works at this location.
Trial record: what to capture

- Failure and responsewhether the team had a usable alternative
- Unresolved questionwhat the operator or your IT contact must confirm
